The scammers will promise that you’ll receive the money, take the money from you  in the name of an upfront fee, and then vanish.

Josh Planos, a spokesperson for BBB, explained that scammers exploit legitimate cases like Camp Lejeune and attempt to weaponize them. He warned that these fraudulent emails often contain links that, when clicked, launch malware attacks on the recipient’s device and redirect them to websites that solicit money or personal information.

Planos emphasized that individuals who served in the Marines at Camp Lejeune may qualify for specific compensation.
